The River

Our program's thematic approach is tied to the heart of Grand Coulee Dam: the river.

Guiding our school-year curriculum, our academic lessons, and our enrichment activities, the river theme introduces students to the vast depth of our beautiful Columbia River. We not only address the physical elements of the river, such as the water, plants and animals, ecology and geography, but also how the river has shaped our history, diverse people groups, cultures, and our nation's economy.

22/23 After-School Program

We have an exciting program packed full of new, engaging activities to enrich your child's education!

Our after school program for the academic year of 2022/23 is divided into 3 main areas of focus which all tie back to the heart of our curriculum: the Columbia river.

Fall quarter begins with a focus on the important history, culture, heritage, and traditions of each of the 12 Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Featuring activities and lessons planned, shared, and given by members of the tribe, our fall unit focus on cultural appreciation, understanding, empathy, and valuing where we come from.

Winter quarter focuses on the ecology and biology of the river. Some questions we will explore include, how was the Columbia basin formed? What is the life cycle of a salmon? What are the individual plants and animals that form the unique biodiversity of the Grand Coulee Dam area?

Spring quarter concludes our focus on the river by carefully examining the construction of the dam, including why it was constructed, why this location was chosen as the construction site, the impact the dam had and continues to have on the land, and how it has impacted the community.
